Pond Management Tips

Being in the pond & lake business for over 30 years, we know a thing or two about tackling unwanted growth. Here are some tricks of the trade that we have learned along the way:

  1. Correctly identify the growth. Though many pond weeds look similar, it is extremely important that it is accurately identified so you can follow the proper treatment protocol. Not all weeds are created equal, and you can easily waste your time and money on the wrong product for a misidentified weed. Use Tsunami DQ for underwater weeds and CattPlex Pro for emerged weeds. Visit our Pond ID page for help with identification.
  2. If your pond happens to be covered in growth, treat in sections. Killing off too much growth at one time can deplete the oxygen too quickly for fish to safely adjust to. For a fully covered pond, we would suggest treating up to 50% of the growth in one treatment, then wait a week before treating the rest.
  3. Consistency is key! Keep a consistent schedule to stay on top of any growth that appears in your pond. We typically treat every two weeks, though more resistant weeds or algae may respond better to weekly treatments.
  4. Don't wait until growth is taking over your pond to treat. Spot treating is much easier to handle vs. a completely covered pond!
  5. Maintain your muck levels. Any dead growth will fall to the bottom and eventually form muck, which is a great nutrient source for future growth. The more muck you have, the more shallow your pond will become. The more shallow it is, the easier it is for sunlight to penetrate through and help spark more growth. Other materials such as leaves and other organic matter will help contribute to muck levels as well. Use bacteria products such as Natural Pond Cleaner or Muck Doctor for treatment.
