Red Tide Algae in Ponds

08 Aug 2013

One of the most important parts about having a beautiful pond year in and year out is being educated about algae and other factors that can hinder the beauty of ponds.  One type of algae that is most common in coastal waters, but does occur in fresh water ponds is called red tide algae.  Although this might be a rarer algae it is still important to know what it is if spotted.

Red tide algae are a common name for a phenomenon known as an algal bloom.  An algal bloom is a large concentration of aquatic microorganisms.  Red tide occurs when the aquatic microorganisms that are part of the algal bloom are a few certain species that take on a red color.  Red tide only occurs when the algal bloom is very dense.  Basically it is millions of tiny organisms that when seen by themselves by the naked eye they go unnoticed, but when they get together it appears as a discoloration in water.

As was said above, red tide is not a common problem in ponds, but if a pond owner is knowledgeable about red tide they will know what it is and how to treat it if it ever does appear in his or her pond.
