Pond Sludge Removal

28 Feb 2011

Keeping your pond’s ecosystem in balance can be a challenge, especially in the first few years. Many problems can appear to erupt out of nowhere. Taking careful stock of the situation you can control nuisances like pond sludge removal. Pond sludge removal is an easy issue to remedy.

The source of your pond sludge is the buildup of excessive amounts of dead algae, dead weeds, and fish waste. Algae blooms not only turn your water a sickly green or brown, they can poison your pond so other aquatic life will be endangered. Determining the cause of your algae bloom is vital to stave off future explosions.

Look for areas where run-off is reaching your pond. Nutrient rich run-off will need to be redirected if found. Or it may be as simple as over feeding of fish. Once the source has been dealt with you can administer an algaecide in recommended doses to bring your pond’s water clarity and quality back to healthy conditions.  However, once you have killed your existing algae bloom, it is very important to add beneficial pond bacteria to help breakdown the dead material.  If you fail to keep your beneficial pond bacteria levels high you are only adding to your pond sludge problem by leaving the dead algae unattended on your pond floor to feed the next bloom.
