Pond Size

12 Dec 2010
Knowing the size of your pond is very important for treatment application, fountain, and aeration installation.

Every pond owner should know the size of their pond; it is the same as knowing the square footage of your home or how much property you own!  Some pond owners may have been the one to excavate the pond and know the exact pond size; while others may have purchased a property with a pond that is 15 or 20 years old and the pond size in unknown.  Whether you are planning on treating your pond or not calculating your pond size is a necessary evil of having a pond.

How to measure your pond size:

  • Square/Rectangular (Pond Size in Acres): Multiply length x width, then divide by 43,560
  • Round (Pond Size in Acres): Multiply diameter x itself, then divide by 547,390

How to measure pond depth:

  • Get a long piece of pvc pipe marked in 1 foot increments
  • Take depth measurements uniformly over the entire pond
  • Add all the measurements together and divide by the number of measurements taken
  • This will give you the average depth in feet

Sanco can also calculate your pond size via satellite.  For instructions on how to calculate your pond size in gallons or additional information about our satellite measuring service, Contact Sanco.
