Chelated Copper Sulfate

04 Aug 2011

Copper sulfate, a mineral normally in a solid state also comes in a chelated copper solution that makes an effective algaecide for spray applications. A chelated copper solution is a blend of two compounds. One is the copper sulfate granule, and the other is an ingredient that allows the copper granules to break down and stay in a liquid state. The ingredient that makes this happen is called a chelator, or sequestering agent. This chelator will form soluble molecules that inactivate the metal ions in the copper preventing it from going back to a solid state.

Sanco’ Crystal Plex is the end result of this type of solution. It is a liquid copper that can stay buoyant in the water column longer than simply breaking down copper sulfate with hot water. Crystal Plex can be diluted even further to spread out your application so that you are not wasting product in one area. A lot of people find it easier to utilize a chelated copper solution for their algae killing needs due to its ready to use state.  Another benefit to using a chelated copper solution like Crystal Plex is that it control a wider variety of algae like chara and planktonic algae.
