Treating Pond Weeds And Algae

07 Nov 2011

There comes a point when you may be wasting your time using algaecides and herbicides.  If you got a late start in the spring treating your pond or depending on your weather you could still have pond weeds and algae in late October and November.

If you live in an area that your temperatures begin to drop drastically in the fall months you could be wasting your money by continuing to treat for weeds and algae.  Even though your weeds and algae are still present they will go into a dormant stage.  In this stage they are not absorbing nutrients, therefore, they will not absorb the chemical you are spraying.
*Note: There are always exceptions. (i.e. cattails are most effectively treated in the fall).

Once your water temperatures dip below 50ºF your plants are most likely going into their dormant stage.  At this point you should suspend weed and algae treatments and dose your pond with plenty of pond dye and beneficial pond bacteria to prepare for next spring.  Over the winter months your pond plants will eventually die off and you can start fresh in early spring.
