Certain weeds found in a pond are much more difficult to control than other weeds. American pond weed, coontail, and hydrilla are pretty simple weeds to control with basic applications. Duckweed is a floating pond weed that is extremely difficult to control.
Duckweed is commonly found in stagnant bodies of water. Because of these conditions they have a heightened tolerance and can reproduce extremely fast. This makes it very difficult to have immediate results. Duckweed can also lower oxygen levels because of how it is layered on the surface of the water and consumes majority of the diffused oxygen in the water column. By installing an aeration system you can create movement in the water and ensure your pond water stays oxygenated.
Duckweed also thrives on nutrient rich water. Using Sanco’s Natural Pond Cleaner will help combat nutrient rich water while cleaning up your pond floor.
Duckweed has a higher tolerance than many other plants causing the need for multiple treatments at the maximum dosage. Sanco suggests using Tsunami DQ to control duckweed. Tsunami DQ is a diquat based herbicide that should be sprayed on. We recommend using the maximum dosage for the most effective control, which is 2 gallons per surface acre. Depending on the severity of the growth you may need to do multiple treatments.
