Taking care of your pond is a very important part of being a pond owner. And by taking care of your pond you’re also taking care of all the wildlife in your pond. Over treating your pond can result in what they call a fish kill. A fish kill, most of the time, is not caused by the chemical used, but by how, much the oxygen level comes down when the chemical kills the weeds or algae.
If you have a significant amount of algae you will want to use Crystal Plex liquid algae control. For submerged weeds like cattails and water lilies use Tsunami DQ.
The safest way to treat your pond is to do it in sections; at least in halves. Treat one half, wait 5 days and then treat the other half. By doing this you are giving the wildlife in your pond enough time to migrate to another area of the pond with greater oxygen levels. They can adapt to a new environmental setting if done with control. If you just throw all your chemicals in and kill off everything you want gone then there is that chance of depriving your fish of oxygen to quickly and suddenly. It is better to be safe and just treat half of your pond at a time.
Other tips to avoid oxygen depletion are to install an aeration system, treat during the day not at night, and try to get control of your growth early in the spring when the water temperatures are cooler. The warmer you water is the less oxygen it will hold.
