Rust Kutter is a phosphoric based chemical that converts rust into a ferric phosphate. That ferric phosphate then acts as a barrier between the metal and the elements preventing any future rust from coming through.
Rust Kutter will work on any ferrous metals. Rust has to be present for this product to work. The number one issue people have is that they sand off the majority of the rust to where there is a minimum amount of rust and almost bare metal showing. If you try and treat these areas it will not work effectively. The product will take a long time to dry and in some cases may not dry in certain areas. Other users drench all the metal they have even though there are only tiny spots of surface rust. This will not work either. Rust has to be present in order for it to be effective.
Rust Kutter works great when you follow our reccomended instructions. Take a wire brush, scrape off the big flaky pieces of rust and spray or brush Rust Kutter directly on the rust. Do not put on painted or “unrusty” areas. After Rust Kutter has been applied you must let it completely dry. Depending on the weather in your location it may take longer than normal for dry time. Rinse your treated area and allow to dry again (discoloration to the metal should be expected). Then you can use a non-zinc based primer (which is recommended but not required) and paint.
