Remove Pond Fountain Pumps in Winter

06 Jan 2014

During the winter months, Sanco advises to remove your floating fountain pumps. This tip will greatly extend the life of your fountain pump and keep it working at its greatest efficiency. Keeping the fountain pump in the water during the winter is risky, as freezing and thawing proves to be damaging to the unit.  Removing your floating fountain pump will prevent damage and also give you a chance to inspect the unit. Make sure to check the cord, pump, and float at this time to save you the effort during the summer months. Pressure wash the unit before storing it in the winter to keep it in prime condition.

If you decide to keep the pump in the water during winter months, make sure to turn off the power supply. Never keep the pump going in the winter because sprayed water will build up as ice on the unit. This buildup of ice can cause the unit to flip over and burn out, which is the biggest problem pond owners face when they keep a fountain pump going in the winter.

To play it safe and keep your floating fountain pumps working in prime condition, either turn off the power supply to your unit, or better yet remove the unit and store it during the winter.
