One of the most prolific diseases to hit our lakes & ponds this summer is a nuisance simply known as: Swimmer’s Itch. The symptoms of this illness are severe, red, itching bumps that appear after swimming; and each time the break-out is worse than the previous time. These rashes are caused by aquatic parasites that naturally cycle between snails and water fowl. So, naturally I’m writing this article to inform you of some different prevention tactics, swimming precautions, and treatment options.
First of all, the best prevention for Swimmer’s Itch that I have found is a product called Swimmer’s Itch Guard; this is a preventative cream that you apply to your skin every 90 minutes you are in the water. This product not only helps to prevent this rash, it also acts as a sunscreen with an SPF of 30. There are also some precautions you can take while swimming to avoid Swimmer’s Itch, these include: avoiding lingering in shallow water, drying off with a towel immediately after getting out of the water, avoiding the water when a breeze is blowing the water toward your property, and discouraging waterfowl from living on your property. Now finally, if you have a severe parasitic infestation in your pond, there is a treatment available to exterminate these nasty buggers from your water environment. This treatment is obtained through the use of copper sulfate in your pond; this will also act as an algae control agent for your water. There are also many other pond maintenance products you may use right alongside the copper product that will drastically improve the look and appeal of your pond.
