Summer fish kill is a natural phenomenon that can be prevented by following some simple rules. Summer fish kill can be caused by several factors: depth of shoreline, massive outburst of aquatic vegetation, and lack of aeration.
Controlling the depth of your shoreline slope can help limit summer plant growth to areas closest near the shore. An ideal shoreline slope is 3:1. The limited amount of weeds and algae will keep oxygen levels balanced between day and night reducing the chance of fish kill.
In an existing pond you can’t really do anything about your shoreline, but you can have an early summer plan to help reduce the amount of aquatic vegetation. Algaecide and herbicide treatments should be done before July 1st along with the use of pond dye’s and beneficial pond bacteria. Having a preventative maintenance plan will keep your pond looking it’s best throughout the season.
The best way to prevent summer fish kill is to install an aeration system. Aeration systems will continuously add oxygen to the water, prevent stratification and early pond turnover.
