Several factors contribute to the growth of algae/weeds in ponds around the country; one of these environmental influences is the fluctuation of the water level in the pond. As the amount of water decreases (especially in the summer heat), the algae & weed growth increases because the sun can rapidly reach the plant life in the pond. This sudden exposure to a higher concentration of wavelength in the water creates a sudden burst of growth within the pond, decreasing the aesthetic value of your pond as a whole.
Pond maintenance becomes very difficult due to the normal dosage no longer being applicable to the water system, because the temperature, water level, sunlight penetration, and growth rate are all against the chemical treatment methods we use on a normal basis to treat. Therefore, in order to have the most effective treatment for your pond you must apply the correct chemical, with the highest application rate, and approximately twice as often as the label says. Each type of aquatic plant growth in a pond has a different chemical that is used to control it throughout the year, now I will briefly explain each type of chemical that is used to treat each kind of weed/algae that plagues your pond.
For a submerged weed like curly leaf, use our Tsunami DQ product. The active ingredient in this chemical product is diquat dibromide which is a highly effective chemical compound that kills a variety of underwater weeds and duckweed. If you have an emerged weed on the other hand, you would use a combination of Catt Plex and Plex Mate. This chemical team effort kills plants like: cattails, lilypads, and loosestrife down to the roots with one thorough dosage. Then, as long as you don’t have any fish from the Cyprinidae family you can use our copper sulfate products to treat your pond’s algae outbreaks throughout the year.
Next, if you want to clean-up that disagreeable muck at the bottom or in the shores of our pond, just use our naturally beneficial bacteria based products: Natural Pond Cleaner or Muck Doctor. Finally, to give your pond that professionally manicured look you can use any of our three colorants: Crystal Blue (turns the water a vibrant shade of blue), Ocean Blue (gives the pond a turquoise blue tint), or Black Out (gives a darkening, rich, natural coloration to the water).
