Pond Treatment in Drought

04 Jul 2012

Drought like conditions are affecting much of the Midwest especially Fort Wayne area.  Many firework shows have been cancelled or postponed because of the dry conditions.  This extreme weather is affecting all water sources including area ponds.

Our Pond Champs service team has observed some Fort Wayne ponds down several feet.  When pond levels decrease the entire balance of the pond can be thrown off and pond owners should be even more cautious than normal when treating. Sanco has some tips to help keep your pond healthy during these stressful conditions.

  1. Monitor your pond closely.  Oxygen levels can be greatly affected by extreme temperatures.  The first sign your pond is low in oxygen will probably come from your fish.  When fish are lacking oxygen they will come to the surface and gulp for air.  It is very important to install an aerator to ensure your pond maintains healthy oxygen levels.
  2. Treating your pond should be done with care.  When you treat for weeds and algae you will be lowering the oxygen levels.  In extreme heat treating weeds and algae could be what causes a fish kill.  In order to avoid a fish kill, continuously run your aerator and only treat ½ or 1/3 of your pond at a time when killing growth.
