No pond owner is going to have a problem-free pond. Pond problems can creep up and surprise you if you’re not careful. Here are two common pond problems.
Aquatic Weeds
Pond plants provide protection of the shoreline from wave erosion, and refuge for small fish. When their growth becomes excessive, it’s time to investigate why. One reason is a shallow pond bed. Aquatic weeds thrive in the warm, shallow areas of your pond. Contact a professional pond excavator on how to properly deepen your pond. When the source of your pond’s aquatic weed problem is addressed, the use of chemical herbicides can be used.
Oxygen Depletion
For fish stock ponds, this is a major concern. Be on the lookout for the following signs:
· Large fish are dying before smaller fish
· Light scum/film is visible on the water
· Fish gulping at the water’s surface
Most low oxygen kills are sudden, but if you see the signs outlined above than aeration is required. One way to circulate water is the installation of an aerator. This is especially important with ponds which have a history of fish kills.
