Pond Problems

13 Jun 2011

Pond problems come in a variety of sizes. Some pond problems are easy to manage; or at least on the surface. Understanding and treating the root cause of your problems will have lasting results that you are sure to appreciate. Here are a few typical pond problems.

  1. The shoreline is crowded with cattails – Whether it’s cattails or other aquatic weeds of this type you may be facing a structural fault in your pond’s design. Cattails are part of a classification of plant known as emergent; since they emerge from the water. Shallow areas are ideal conditions for emergent plants to thrive.  Use Sanco’s Catt Plex and Plex Mate to  kill these emerged weeds to the root.
  2. Algae Blooms keep coming back in cycles – This process can occur when excessive amounts of nutrients – namely nitrogen and phosphorous – are present in the pond. The algae will feed on the nutrients and grow out of control to the breaking point of your pond’s ecosystem. The algae will die off and their remains will settle to the bottom. The still present nutrients and the decaying pond bottom will then fuel a new cycle. The key is kill the algae, removing the source of the nutrients and then dealing with the decaying matter on the pond’s floor with beneficial pond bacteria.
