Pond muck is one of those disgusting and annoying problems to have with a pond. No one likes to walk through slimy dirty muck just to try and go for a swim. Or deal with it getting stirred up and turning your water a muddy color. A lot of people think it’s just muck and it doesn’t hurt anything. Well, that’s not necessarily true. Pond muck is made up of all sorts of dead vegetation and broken down debris. This sludge can be full of micronutrients that weeds and algae live off of and they can thrive in ponds with excessive muck.
There are a couple products out there that work very well in fighting against muck build up. One is Natural Pond Cleaner, part of the Crystal Blue aquatic line. Natural Pond Cleaner is a liquid bacteria product that is considered a maintenance dose. Any form of pond bacteria will begin to break down organic material and neutralizing nitrates and phosphates.
Another similar bacteria product called Muck Doctor is extremely effective and fast acting due to its concentrated dry spike form. These Muck Doctor spikes go straight to the bottom in the pond muck and start to slowly deteriorate releasing the highly concentrated bacteria directly into the muck. It’s pretty amazing how this product works at such a fast pace. You can see a pit starting to form around where the spike was thrown only days after the application.
