07 Feb 2012

Having a structured plan of attack to maintain your pond or small lake will go a long way to owning a pond that is useable and beautiful all year round. Pond maintenance is vital in controlling aquatic plants. Sanco Industries provides the advice and pond products you need to be successful.

Controlling aquatic plants with herbicides is a common means of killing weeds in ponds. The first step to proper dosage and using the right chemical is to identify the weeds you want to remove. Some species of plant are more resistant than others.  So knowing the weeds you want to eradicate is important for best results.

Here are a few tips about different chemicals and their uses:

  • Copper sulfate – best used to control algae. Avoid treating the entire pond at once as it can lead to low oxygen levels
  • Chelated copper – more effective and expensive than copper sulfate.  Chelated copper is liquid form of copper that will stay suspended in the water column longer than granular copper.
  • Diquat – effective on submerged and surface weeds like duckweed.  Dosing can range from 2-8 quarts per acre depending on the type of weed you want to control.

There is a long list of chemicals used in pond maintenance. If you have a question about one, just drop us a line. Simply contact Sanco Industries for the answer!
