Pond Fountain Pump in Winter

The pros and cons of removing pond fountain pumps:                                                                 
Some people believe in keeping fountain pumps in during winter and some believe they should come out. The reasons to take the pond fountain pump out include:

  • Preventing possible damage of the fountain pump through freezing
  • Reducing disturbing the fish through motion
  • Saving money on electricity.

Reasons to keep the pond fountain pump in include:     

  • Helping to keep the pond from freezing
  • Reducing stagnation on warmer days          
  • Preventing the death of any plants like watercress in the waterfall or stream
  • Added aeration *note all of these should and can be done by installing an aerator.  Aerators are meant to be kept in your pond through the winter months.

Most outdoor pond fountain pumps are made to tolerate harsh elements, but to extend the life of your pond fountain pump precautions should be take during the winter mnths.  Here are a few helpful hints for keeping your pond fountain pump safe during the winter:

1. Remove the fountain/pump from the pond.

2. Remove any algae/debris from the fountain/pump.  If needed use a power washer or scrub brush and dish soap clean the fountain/pump.

3. Let the fountain/pump dry completely.

4. Store fountain/pump in a dry place with temperature above freezing.

It is best to use distilled water but tap water is okay in most cases. Fountain pumps that contain oil may require maintenance and/or oil changes.
