Pond Dye as Flocculent

10 Jul 2011

Many pond owners have an issue with muddy water.  Muddy pond water can be a result of a number of different sources like; bottom feeding fish, improperly built shorelines, muskrats, heavy rains, and erosion.  You can mask muddy water by using pond dyes and/or flocculants but ultimately you should pin point the source of your muddy water and address that problem.

A flocculent is a product that will bind the floating particles together so that they will sink to the bottom of the pond floor.  Be sure to read all labels and restrictions when using flocculants.

Pond dye’s like Sanco’s Crystal Blue, Black Out, and Ocean Blue can sometimes act as a flocculent.  The pond colorant will attach itself to the floating particles and they will eventually sink to the bottom.  However, when this occurs the pond dye appears to be ineffective in coloring the pond because all of the dye has sunk to the bottom and there is no color in the water column to tint the pond.

This is why it is important to find the source of your muddy water then use pond dyes to aid in the clarity and beauty of your pond.
