Sanco recommends applying 1 gallon of our pond dyes (Crystal Blue, Ocean Blue, or Black Out) to 1 acre of water with an average depth of 4-6 feet deep. I encounter a lot of people that have deeper ponds or don’t have an accurate measurement of their pond. The first step to ensure you use the correct amount of pond dye is to be sure you have an accurate measurement of your pond and you know the average depth.
Once you know the surface area of your pond you then need to calculate the average depth. Often times when pond owners have little or no effect after introducing pond dye they have miscalculated the depth of their pond. This step in measuring is crucial because you are coloring your entire water column and if you estimate your average depth is 4 feet and it is actually 8 feet you will need almost double the product!
Measure the average depth of your pond by taking several (30 or more) depth measurements in various parts of your pond. Add all of these measurements up and divide by the number of measurements you took.
A good way of telling if you have enough dye in your pond is to take a white paper, foam, or plastic plate and lower it roughly 12-14 inches underwater about two feet from the shoreline. There should be a nice uniform tint of the color dye you chose. This simple trick assures you have the right amount of dye in your pond.
