Pond Algaecides

22 Mar 2012

As pond temperatures warm up many pond owners will start to notice algae forming on the pond.  Pond dyes and bacteria are great preventative products to use until your water temperatures reach an appropriate temperature to treat for algae.  Sanco offers two types of algaecides.  Both have the same active ingredient but one is a liquid and one is a granular.

Copper Sulfate Crystals- granular copper than can be cast out in the pond.  Granular copper is primarily used to treat filamentous or string algae.

Crystal Plex- liquid copper sulfate should be mixed with water as sprayed on the pond.  Crystal Plex will treat some forms of algae that granular will not like chara and oscillatoria.

Another difference between these copper sulfate based products is that the Crystal Plex will stay active in the water column for a longer period of time than the granular copper, which can cut back on the amount of times a pond needs to be treated.

Always be sure to treat a portion of your pond at a time and to properly identify your growth before you start treating to ensure you have the correct product.
