Pond Algaecide Products

Pond algaecides are very effective.  Learn what's available and how to use them.

There are several pond algaecides available.  In this article, we will introduce common algaecides for use in ponds and how one may use them effectively.

One of the oldest and most effective algaecides available is copper sulfate.  Copper sulfate comes in several forms ranging from a fine powder to sugar sized granules all the way up to marble sized granules.  The size of the granules is important in application.  The smaller granules dissolve faster and broadcast over a larger area.  The larger granules dissolve slower and stay in a tighter area.  I prefer a sugar sized granule that allows me to dissolve the copper sulfate into a spray solution when mixed with water.  The dust size is just too dusty and leads to irritation to the lungs and eyes.  Be sure to follow all label instructions when applying copper sulfate.  Sanco has the sugar size granular form called Crystal Blue Copper Sulfate available in 5 pound bags.  Keep in mind that all copper products can be lethal to fish, especially trout and koi, if used at greater than 1 part per million.

A fairly recent breakthrough in copper technology has lead to a chelated copper product.  Chelation is the process of suspending an element in a solution that allows it to be absorbed much more effectively.

Chelated liquid copper products can be mixed with water and sprayed over algae that are both floating and submerged.  Crystal Plex is a chelated product available from Sanco.

Alternatives to copper based algaecides include endothal salts and hydrogen peroxide.  Endothal salts are effective, but tend to have long water restriction times and need to be used by a skilled applicator to avoid problems.  Hydrogen peroxide is quite expensive although it does work well and is fish friendly.

Choosing an algaecide can be tricky.  Hopefully, this article will help to guide you in the choosing of your most cost effective algaecide for your pond.
