So, you have come more than half way through the pond treatment season. Everything has pretty much gone according to plan up to this point. However, with rising temperatures and warmer waters, things in your pond are starting to heat up!
The heat of midsummer can be intense. Sunlight is also very penetrating and is likely to promote significant growth of algae and weeds in the pond. What can be done during the midsummer season to manage the growth of this vegetation?
First and foremost, keep the color of the pond dark by using pond dye. Keep adding Natural Pond Cleaner once a month in order to keep nutrient loads manageable. Using copper sulfate or Crystal Plex, treat algae every 2 weeks or once a week if it has a tendency to overwhelm the pond. Fighting emergent weeds like cattails and grasses is also necessary due to the weather. Use Catt Plex with Plex Mate to keep grasses down and cattails from overrunning your banks. Submerged weeds can also begin to flourish and fill the pond in from the bottom up. Use recommended rates of Tsunami DQ to aid in controlling these nuisance weeds.
All in all, midsummer can become a headache if you fail to step it up a notch on your treatments. Be sure to spend a little extra TLC to your pond during this stretch of the season.
