Koi and Copper Sulfate

Some products offered by Sanco Industries such as copper sulfate granulars and liquid copper work hard and efficiently in destroying algae in whatever body of water they are applied to.  With that said, there is a certain application that is necessary to use copper based products and ones where it is absolutely not necessary or even recommended to use copper based products.  One application that should never see the likes of any copper based products is to Koi fish ponds.

When koi fish come in contact with copper they can be killed almost immediately.  Right after mercury, copper is the most deadly and toxic metal to Koi.  Copper ions slow down gill secretions and cause death to koi’s by asphyxiation.  Koi fish are expensive and beautiful and can be the center point in most decorative ponds.  At Sanco we want to promote our copper based products because of the effectiveness they have in destroying algae, but we also want to make it very clear that using these same products in a decorative koi pond can be very destructive and we absolutely urge decorative pond owners against it.
