Many pond owners plant cattails in their pond because they look nice, they are a safe haven for fish, and cattails can help prevent erosion. However, cattails are very hardy and they spread rapidly. Your attractive small patch of cattails will soon take over the edges of your pond making virtually impossible to treat, fish, and swim.
Killing cattails is a must to keep the growth under control. The best way to kill cattails is by using an aquatic approved herbicide with the active ingredient, glyphosate. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Round Up, but Round Up is not approved for aquatic use and could harm your fish. Sanco Industries offers an aquatic approved glyphosate for killing cattails called Catt Plex. Catt Plex doesn’t contain the harmful surfactants like Round Up; therefore your fish will be safe. It is strongly recommended you add an aquatic approved surfactant to your Catt Plex spray mixture to get the best results. We offer a surfactant in several sizes, Plex Mate, which is safe for aquatic use.
Catt Plex comes in a quart bottle and will kill approximately ¼ acre of cattails. This largely depends on how dense your cattails are, you may need less or more.
To kill cattails mix 2-3oz. to every gallon of water, add surfactant, and saturate the stalks. Be sure you have at least 24 hours with no precipitation to ensure the mixture was absorbed by the cattails. The first treatment you should achieve a kill on 60% of the total area you sprayed. When the cattails are dead they will appear brown and will then need to manually be removed.
