The ultimate goal for any pond owner is to have a clean and clear pond. Generally if you care that much about your pond than you probably care that much about your lawn and surrounding landscape. Most property owners use some sort of fertilizers on their lawn and landscape, however this fertilizer is also making it difficult to control your pond growth.
Fertilizers are meant to keep your lawn looking green and luscious…well they will have the same effect on your pond if you are not careful. The use of beneficial pond bacteria like Sanco’s Natural Pond Cleaner will help neutralize fertilizer run off. Another important step you can take to ensure your pond doesn’t encourage weed and algae growth is to keep at least a 10 foot perimeter that is not fertilized and use fertilizers that do not contain phosphorus.
Most fertilizers have three parts NPK (shown on packaging like this: 9-18-9). The “P” stands for phosphorus, which pond weeds and algae love! It is said that one pound of phosphorus can produce approximately 10,000 pounds of wet weeds and algae. Try to look for a lawn fertilizer that do not contain phosphorus; the bag will have a zero for the middle number.
If you do have weeds or algae you will need to use an aquatic approved herbicide or algaecide to treat existing growth.
