High and Dry Pond Season

18 Jul 2012

This summer’s lack of rain is leaving many Midwest ponds high and dry.  Biologists believe this drought will affect more than just pond water levels.  The drought may affect fish populations for years to come.

If temperatures remain high we will start to see more fish kills.  Excessive heat, poor circulating pond water, and increased algae growth will contribute to the possibility of fish kill.

The excessive heat is out of our control, but pond owners can combat poor circulating pond water and increased algae growth by installing aerators and using algaecides to keep algae at a minimum.  Aerators typically sit on the pond floor and produce bubbles that rise to the surface.  This not only keeps the pond from becoming stagnant but it also adds oxygen throughout the water column.

Sanco’s Crystal Plex can be used to control pond algae.  Always be sure to treat ½ of your pond at a time to avoid oxygen depletion.
