Healthier Septic Tank

29 Jan 2012

Septic tank care is vital to a properly running septic system. Many times, homeowners don’t consider septic tank care until a backup or septic tank failure has occurred. The easiest factor that homeowners can control to lengthen the life of their septic tank system is the use of water.

Each septic tank is installed with an expected amount of water usage. It’s based on a few key elements:

·         Home occupancy - takes factors like showers, baths, hand-washing of dishes, and toilet flushes into account

·         Installed water-dependant appliances (dishwashers, washing machines) – takes the discharge of wastewater from these appliances into account

When either of these factors is increased, a reduction in water usage is prudent. Too much water can overload a septic system, pushing wastewater still containing solids into the leech line system. The leech line system is the network of lines leaving a septic tank which disperses the treated, water into the ground.

Ways to reduce water usage when the number of people increases is to...

·         Install low-flow toilets that effectively move solid waste with less water.

·         Store water in a refrigerator for “instantaneous cool water, instead of running water until its cool to drink.

More Appliances

Some methods of reducing appliance wastewater include:

·         Install energy efficient, low water using washers and dishwashers.

·         Run shorter, smaller loads to reduce the impact of many appliances emptying into the septic tank at once; overwhelming it.

Reducing water usage, even when these factors don’t change, can length the time you need to call professionals for an inspection. Typically you need your septic tank inspected every 2 to 5 years, with pumping as necessary.
