Floating Pond Algae

30 Jun 2011
Floating pond algae is one of the most unattractive types of growth in a pond.  It is also sometimes very difficult to keep under control depending on the weather conditions.  There are a couple of products that can be used to effectively control killing and preventing floating pond algae.
A direct application of raw copper sulfate granules onto a floating algae mat will cause an instant kill.  By uniformly casting a thin layer of copper sulfate granules on the floating mat, you are doing a spot treatment.  This is effective but needs to be done on a regular basis.
You can get ahead of the pond aglae growth by using a liquid copper version called Crystal Plex.  Crystal Plex is specially formulated to keep its copper buoyant in the water for up to 3-4 weeks.  This means it kills a forming algae before it gets a chance to break free from the pond floor and rise to the surface.  With the use of these products you can become algae free or at least have the floating pond algae managable.
