Fish Stocking and Overpopulation

22 Aug 2011

Fish overpopulation can be caused by several factors.  One is simply overstocking your pond in the first place and the second is lack of fishing.  Fish overpopulation can be pretty common in a lot of private ponds and lakes. If these bodies of water are hardly ever fished, then over population is almost a guarantee.

Some signs and symptoms of fish population are water quality, fish activity, and possible fish sores.  When a pond becomes over-populated the water quality will eventually deteriorate and cause sickness within the pond due to the amount of waste accumulating in the pond.  Fish will start fighting over food source and many fish may become stunted.
Too many fish in your pond can lead to a build up of organic material which will lead to an excessive growth of weeds and algae.  Sanco's beneficial pond bacteria product, Natural Pond Cleaner, can be used to maintain your organic material.  If algae and weeds begin to grow in your pond it is important to treat your growth before it gets out of control.

It is important to contact your local fish hatchery to get accurate stocking rates for the size of your pond and the species of fish you want to stock with.  Overpopulation can be avoided by regularly fishing your pond each year or allowing others access to your property to ensure your population stays in check.
