Fall is here, and every pond owner needs to be mindful of pond weed control. Aside from the small amount of shoreline aquatic plants like cattails, other pesky weeds are still growing as most of nature is readying for winter. Three major “orders” of plant are to be monitored and dealt with swiftly as the warm weather permits:
· Submerged – These plants spend a vast majority of type growing beneath the water’s surface. Examples include: hornwort and parrot’s feather.
· Floating – These plants are suspended on the water’s surface with a root system totally within the water. Examples include: water hyacinth and duckweed.
· Emergent – These aquatic plants have a root system anchored to the pond’s floor, and stem growth well above the water’s surface. Examples include: cattails and water lilies.
