Some pond growth becomes more difficult to treat as fall progresses. It is always important to identify your pond plants and know how they grow. By doing this you can save yourself a lot of time and money.
Algae like chara can become calcified later in the season making it very difficult for the Crystal Plex to penetrate into the plant. Weeds typically die on their own in the fall and you wouldn’t want to waste time and money to spray them.
Another factor to consider when using algaecides and herbicides late in the season is the water temperature. When water temperatures decrease plants will become almost dormant. Pond weeds and algae absorb very little nutrients when water temperatures dip below 50ºF; therefore, they are not going to absorb chemical.
Sanco recommends getting control of your growth early so that you don’t have to worry about late season treatments. If you do have late season weeds and algae test a section of your pond before using mass amounts of chemical to only find out it has been wasted. Late season treatments should be focused on using pond dyes and beneficial pond bacteria to help break down all of the growth from the summer that has sunk to the pond floor.
