Fall Pond Maintenance

04 Sep 2011

As the temperatures become milder and your busy summer schedules begin to wind down you will be tempted to pay less attention to your pond.  In fact, you should be paying just as much if not more attention to your pond.  Fall pond maintenance is just as important as early spring and midsummer treatments.

Fall pond maintenance is preparing your pond for cooler temperatures and ensuring that you will have a healthy and successful start in the spring.  Be sure to keep up on existing weed and algae growth, because if left unattended weeds and algae can still take over.

Another important pond maintenance tip is to continue your pond dye and beneficial pond bacteria applications.  Extra beneficial pond bacteria treatments will ensure any dead weeds and algae will be broken down.  If the dead weeds and algae on the pond floor are left unattended, this material will simply feed next year’s algae and weed growth.

If you have a fountain make plans to remove, clean, and store the unit.  Aeration systems should be run 365 days of the year especially during the winter to ensure the health of your fish.
