Excessive Pond Plants

20 Nov 2011

Sanco believes that the presence of some pond plants is acceptable and a sign of a healthy eco system.  However, pond plant growth can get out of control quickly and can cause many problems in your pond.

  • Recreational use of the pond becomes difficult if not impossible (swimming, fishing, and boating).
  • Fish may be stunted or overpopulation can occur because the larger fish can’t get to the smaller fish to keep fish population in check.
  • Believe it or not too many pond plants can lead to fish kills.  Plants give off oxygen during the day but consume oxygen at night through respiration.
  • Excessive weed and algae growth will result in a quiet/stagnant pond which is a perfect habitat and breeding ground for mosquitos.
  • An overgrown pond will lower property values.

Using preventative maintenance products like Sanco's pond dyes and beneficial pond bacteria will help slow the weed growth down.  Once you have plant growth you will want to monitor its progress and control your plant growth with algaecides and/or herbicides.

First, identify your pond plant so you know what product to use.  For algae you will use Crystal Plex a liquid copper sulfate that effectively kills algae within 24-48 hours.  Emerged weeds like cattails can be controlled by using Catt Plex and submerged and floating weeds should be burned back with Tsunami DQ.  Monitoring your pond and knowing what you have growing will make keeping your pond at a healthy balance easy.
