Eliminate Green Pond Water

17 Aug 2011

As you stroll around your large pond or lake you notice that is looks more like pea soup (a.k.a. green pond water) than a body of water. Your pond is overrun with single-cell, or planktonic algae. Restoring your pond’s water clarity and beauty becomes your mission. But, how do you combat an enemy you can’t see?

The first step is to locate any sources of nutrients entering your pond. Lawn fertilizers, grass clippings, and nearby trees (leaves dropping) are common sources of phosphates and nitrates; the fuel that drives algae growth. For situations where you can’t prevent runoff rich nutrients entering your pond, consult a pond engineer for options.

Having removed the primary source of the algae’s food; you are one step closer to making that green pond water history. Adding beneficial bacteria and algaecide, if desired, is a two-pronged attack that will subdue and control your algae problem.  Remember to wait 5 days between treatments to ensure your beneficial pond bacteria is not being harmed by your algaecide.
