Early season pond treatment should consist of using a pond dye and beneficial pond bacteria. Pond treatments during the spring months are considered preventative treatments. Pond owners should be using preventative maintenance to help prevent an overwhelming surge in pond growth like weeds and algae when the temperatures peek in midsummer.
Sanco’s pond dyes (Crystal Blue, Ocean Blue, and Black Out) can be used in any season. If you are in an area where your pond is frozen through the winter months you can pour the colorant onto the ice just before it thaws to ensure your pond dye is being used to its maximum potential. For more information on the benefits of using pond dyes read our article on “The Truth About Pond Dye”.
Beneficial pond bacteria like Sanco’s Natural Pond Cleaner should be introduced in the early spring once your water temperatures reach 45-50ºF. The bacteria in Sanco’s products will start slow in cooler water temperatures and then speed up as the water temperatures increase. As the bacteria become more active they will consume more muck on the pond floor at a faster rate. We have a variety of bacteria products to choose from, but Natural Pond Cleaner is the maintenance dose we recommend using on a monthly basis.
