Duckweed Prevention

16 May 2013

Controlling duckweed is difficult, so the best method is to try and prevent the duckweed growth before it even happens.

Duckweed thrives in stagnate nutrient rich water, so one way of preventing duckweed growth is to have a fountain or aerator. Having a fountain or an aerator is beneficial because it disturbs the surface of the water, which effectively prevents stagnation and duckweed growth.

Another condition that allows duckweed to thrive is having excessively nutrient rich water. Beneficial pond bacteria will combat this problem by balancing out the nutrient levels in your pond and getting rid of excessive nitrates and phosphates.

Another important step to prevent duckweed is to make sure that you do not fertilize around your pond. Fertilizing around your pond will feed weeds and contribute to not only a duckweed problem but also it will spur the growth of other aquatic weeds.

If you already have duckweed in your pond, use Tsunami DQ. Tsunami DQ is a nonselective herbicide for submerged and floating pond weeds that will kill existing duckweed.
