Duckweed Identification

20 Sep 2012

Duckweed is a tiny seed like plant that floats on the surface of the pond water.  The bright green color and abundant population of the seed like leaves lead to misidentification by many pond owners.

Duckweed is often misidentified when viewing a pond from a distance.  The tiny green leaves cluster together forming a matte like appearance over the surface of the pond and from a distance appear to be algae mats.  As a pond owner it is extremely important to identify your growth before you attempt to treat.  Here are some tips when your pond begins to grow pesky green plants:

  1. Get close and examine your growth…to say that you have something green growing in your pond that floats on the surface doesn’t really eliminate any possibility.
  2. Handle the growth so you know if it is slimy, granular, or has no consistency.
  3. Compare your growth with photos on pond plant ID’s online.
  4. When in doubt send us a picture and we can have our aquatic specialist identify your growth and recommend the appropriate product.

If you do have a duckweed infestation Sanco recommends Tsunami DQ at the rate of 2 gallons to every acre.  For more information on duckweed identification or control contact the helpful staff at Sanco.
