Duckweed Control

23 Jun 2011

Duckweed is a floating pond weed that is sometimes misidentified as algae.  Upon closer examination, duckweed looks like a tiny seed with a small stem hanging from it.  The thousands of tiny seed like weeds will coat the top layer of your pond in a thick green mat if not maintained properly.  Duckweed can be carried in from other ponds via traveling waterfowl, fishing lures, or transferring boats from one pond to another.

Duckweed can be controlled with Sanco’s Tsunami DQ.  However, you will have to use the maximum dosage and most likely have to do several treatments.  The maximum dosage for Tsunami DQ is 2 gallons per acre.  If you can wait until all of the duckweed blows to one side of the pond to treat you will have the most effective kill.  Wait 5 days and then you may have to do another treatment.

Be sure to treat when you have at least 24 hours with no rain.  Using pond dyes and beneficial pond bacteria will also help prevent the duckweed from getting worse.
