Disposing Your Christmas Tree in Your Pond

01 Jan 2014
Christmas is coming to a close.  Lights will soon be coming down, snow is falling, and ponds will continue to freeze.  The tree provides a beautiful focal point for the holidays.  Once the holidays are over it is time to dispose of the tree.  Many pond owners decide to dispose of the tree in their pond.  There are pros and cons to disposing a tree into a pond and it is important for pond owners to be educated about both.

One main pro for disposing a tree into a pond is to provide shelter and safety for fish to breed.  The tree becomes a home for the fish and for pond owners who want to see more fish in their pond this is a great way to get ahead.  Fish are beautiful and the tree can help with that, however not only good comes from disposing a tree into a pond.  Unfortunately, over time dead Christmas trees will start to break up.  The shelter for the fish disappears and the tree starts to decay into muck.  Muck is a nasty word for anyone familiar with ponds.  Muck is broken down organic material, such as leaves, trimmings, or Christmas trees.  Nobody likes to entertain guests in a muck filled pond.
