Controlling Pond Leeches

28 Jun 2011

A common problem in ponds is an excessive leech population.  While there is no product you can introduce to control leeches; Sanco has some recommendations to reduce the number of leeches in your body of water.

Leeches usually reside in shallower areas near swimming and dock areas.  You will often find them under rocks and they will burrow into the mud during the winter months.  If you notice there is an abundance of leeches in your pond is probably because your fish population is too low.  Most ponds have leeches.  They are an important part of a body of water, however, if your fish population is too low there will be nothing in your pond to control the leech population.

You should introduce bass or bluegill to help control the leech population.  The appropriate stocking ratio for a 1 acre pond is 600-1000 bluegill and 200 bass in the fall. Swimming in deeper waters will also prevent them from attaching to humans.
