Controlling American Pond Weed

18 Jul 2011

American pond weed, also known as Large Leaf Pond Weed, is one of those weeds that can easily be controlled but can take over your pond if not treated correctly.  Sanco Industries offers an herbicide, Tsunami DQ that will quickly burn down these unattractive weeds.

Tsunami DQ is a diquat dibromide based herbicide. I know from personal experience how well this herbicide works against submerged aquatic weeds like American Pondweed. A friend of mine recently purchased a property with a pond and the pond was overtaken with American Pondweed. There was a fair amount of impressive game fish that we wanted to be sure we didn’t harm.

After diagnosing the pond, I revisited the later that week with my Tsunami DQ mixture. I started out only treating 1/3 of his pond. I waited approximately 4 days for the next third then another 4 days for the remaining 1/3. I did this because I did not want to harm any fish from oxygen depletion. Within the next week I returned to see the results and there was not one bit of American Pond Weed left in the pond and the fish were still healthy.  I have used Tsunami DQ for this problem at multiple ponds and have had great success ever time.
Tsunami DQ can be used at a rate of 2- 8 quarts per acre of water.  We reccomend using a mixture of 3-4 ounces of Tsunami DQ to every gallon of water.
