Cleaning Pond Scum

05 Feb 2012

When Sanco talks about cleaning pond scum we are referring to the buildup of organic material on the pond floor.  This organic material usually consists of dead leaves, fish debris, and dead pond weeds and algae that have sunk to the bottom of your pond.  Pond scum is also referred to as muck and/or sludge.

Cleaning up your pond scum is an important step in preventative pond maintenance.  By maintaining your pond scum you are maintaining the primary food source that will encourage your pond weeds and algae to thrive.  Sanco Industries has two main products we recommend to clean up your pond scum:

  • Natural Pond Cleaner- is a liquid maintenance dose of beneficial pond bacteria that should be added every 30 days to maintain a healthy balance.
  • Muck Doctor- are spikes that are highly concentrated dry forms of beneficial pond bacteria.  Muck Doctor is very useful in dock and beach areas as well as along shorelines.

When using bacteria products for cleaning pond scum, we also recommend the use of aeration.  Our beneficial pond bacteria products will work no aeration but are much more active with aeration.
