The saying goes, “if 1 ounce is supposed to work, then adding more is even better!” Unfortunately, this is just not true, especially when using Catt Plex, our form of glyphosate.
Catt Plex is a product that contains 58.3% glyphosate. It is used to control cattails, reeds, grasses, lily pads, and other assorted shoreline weeds. The recommended rate that is used to control cattails is 3 ounces per gallon, mixed with a teaspoon of surfactant. Now, what happens if one increases the amount of Catt Plex in the mix in the hope that it will work even better? Well, at 4 ounces per gallon, the effectiveness begins to decrease. Why is that? Catt Plex is a salt. Because of its chemistry as a salt, it tends to burn leaves. Due to this fact, if too much Catt Plex is applied to weeds, it actually burns the leaves so severely that the product never descends to the root to kill the plant from the root up. Keep in mind that Catt Plex must reach the root in order to kill the entire plant, so if the leaves are burned so quickly that the Catt Plex isn’t carried to the roots, the plant will replace the burned leaves and come back.
In summary, adding more Catt Plex than what is recommended is not going to make the mix more effective in controlling weeds. Stick to the label and find success with Catt Plex! For more information on pond maintenance contact Sanco Industries.
