Blue-Green Algae Control

30 Aug 2011

Our research has shown that a combination of things aid in the control of blue-green algae, specifically the members of the oscillatoria group.

To begin with, nutrient levels must be reduced by using bacteria and bacterial enzymes.  Sanco suggests, Natural Pond Cleaner at the labeled rate of 1 gallon per surface acre once every two weeks or once a month, depending on the nutrient load.

Actual algae treatment includes Crystal Plex at the maximum rate of 1 gallon per acre foot mixed with Tsunami DQ (diquat dibromide) at a rate of ½ gallon per surface acre.  These should begin in late March or early April, well before oscillatoria begins growing.  This will build up the ppm of copper early and condition the pond’s wildlife to the high copper ppm before the heat of summer causes stress on said wildlife.

Keep in mind that oscillatoria and other blue-greens only achieve superiority due to the elimination of competition; otherwise, they are subjected to the growth of other strains of algae and submerged weeds.  So, allowing other desirable algae groups, such as chara or nitella, to persist could aid in prevention of blue-greens.  We have noted that in ponds where chara and nitella are managed rather than eliminated, we do not have problems with blue-green algae blooms.
