Bacteria in Pond Water During Winter

26 Nov 2012

Bacteria are essential to a healthy pond environment.  Adding pond bacteria to your pond all year long is a great idea – even in winter!

The average temperature rarely dips below 45 degrees at the bottom of a pond at least 4 feet deep (in the Midwest, deeper to the north, shallower to the south).  Because of this, the bacteria in the muck will continue to work on reducing muck and nutrients all winter long.  They will slow down, but will not freeze out.  The bacterial colonies will persist through the winter and begin aggressively working in the spring, once temperatures rise.

Applying the Natural Pond Cleaner into a frozen pond can be tricky.  You may want to bore a hole in the ice to introduce the product, but usually it is unnecessary if you apply in late November and in late February to cover your winter applications.

Keep in mind that applying biologicals in late fall and during the winter season is very beneficial to your pond even in colder climates.  Applying then will save work later in the spring and summer!  For more information on our complete line of pond maintenance products contact Sanco.
