Spring Pond Treatment

31 May 2011

Rain in the early spring can slow down treatments of problems in your pond.  Here are a few tips to help you begin a successful treatment season this spring.

Begin with adding pond dyes and beneficial pond bacteria to your pond right after the ice comes off.  Both of these products are easy to pour into the pond, even in the rain!

Early treatment of algae can be done once the water is above 40 degrees F.  Spraying algae can be done in the rain but is more effective in sunlight.  Liquid algaecides such as Crystal Plex make spraying copper easier and less problematic than using dry copper sulfate.  Avoid putting a boat in the water if the ground is saturated; this could lead to ruts in the lawn.  Also, copper sulfate can be cast from a bucket in the dry form if needed.

It is best to wait until May to treat underwater weeds.  This usually eliminates treatment during extremely wet weather and gives you much more friendly conditions to treat in.

Cattails and grasses cannot be treated in a rain.  You can apply Catt Plex during a dry spell between showers, but be sure to spray 1 to 2 hours before a rain to give you a chance at a good treatment.

Overall, early spring rains can make it uncomfortable to treat in, but not impossible.  Use these tips and your pond will respond favorably in late spring when the weather is more accommodating.
