Spring Pond Maintenance Tips

06 Jan 2011

Spring will be upon us before you know it, and if you aren’t careful your pond will turn into a green mess quickly.  There are some simple spring pond maintenance tips to help keep your pond looking clean and clear.  These pond maintenance tips won’t completely stop weeds and algae from growing but they can definitely help slow down the growth in your pond so it is easier to control.

Spring pond maintenance tips are simply preventative actions to help prevent weeds and algae.  The idea behind preventative pond maintenance is to create an environment that pond weeds and algae do not like to grow in.

The first pond maintenance tip is to add pond dye to your water very early in the spring, as soon as the ice melts if your pond is frozen.  Be sure to keep you pond tinted throughout the summer to ensure a beautiful pond all year long.

The second pond maintenance tip is to introduce high doses of pond bacteria into your pond once the water temperature reaches 50 degrees F.  If you have killed weeds and algae in the past, have leaves from the fall in your pond, or have fish; your pond is filled with high doses of nutrients that are ready to feed your weeds and algae.  Pond bacteria feed on all of this organic material that has settled on your pond floor.  Therefore, if you use pond bacteria your weeds and algae will have much less nutrients and food and will grow much slower.
