Pond Weed Treatment

13 Jun 2016

Pond weeds are a common problem for many pond owners.  If not managed pond weeds will take over a pond and make it difficult to canoe, swim and even fish.   Unlike algae, pond weeds are usually a problem later in the season, June-August, because they thrive in warmer water.  Continual dosing of pond dye and pond bacteria can drastically slow down the growth of aquatic weeds.

Once pond weeds start, Sanco can help you keep your growth under control.  In order to control pond weeds you need to use an aquatic herbicide.  Sanco has two different aquatic herbicides: Tsunami DQ and Catt Plex.  Depending on how the pond weed is growing will determine which product you will need to use.  Any weed floating or under water will need to be treated with Tsunami DQ.  Weeds growing above the surface of the water should be treated with Catt Plex.

Both of these pond weed killers are contact herbicides.  You will need to spray the product on or in the water where the weeds are growing in order to be successful.  You can’t just dump these products into your pond.

Treating Above Water Weeds

Mix 3oz of Catt Plex, 1oz of Plex Mate, and 1 gallon of water.  Spray growth above water liberally.  This product works slowly because it kills to the root.  It will take approximately 7 days for yellowing and up to 14 days for a complete kill.

Treating Surface and Underwater Weeds

To spot treat underwater weeds mix 4-5oz of Tsunami DQ with each gallon of water and spray the surface of the water where weeds are growing.  The product will filter down through the water column and be absorbed by the weeds.  The maximum amount of Tsunami DQ per treatment for an acre pond is 2 gallons.  For tougher weeds like duckweed you will need to use the maximum dosing and spray the entire pond.  Follow this link for detailed instructions on how to successfully treat duckweed.
